Buffon was officially unveiled by PSG on Monday after his first training session with the club, and the former Juventus and Italy No 1 believes he can realise his Champions League ambition at the age of 40.

“I chose to come here because I felt I could still give something important,” he began.

“I want to prove that I’m still a great goalkeeper and I’ll do that. I’d also played for the national team until last year, so I showed I was competitive.

“I’ll keep playing for as long as I feel good and show I’m among the best. As soon as these stop happening, I’ll be the first to step aside.

“I love challenges, I want to test myself. My first training session was difficult, since so many of the lads here speak a different language, but this nonetheless makes me happy.

“In a month or two, I’ll be a stronger person. I’ll have new friends and be accustomed to a new culture. I’ll be a better person and footballer.

“Champions League? I’ve come to an ambitious club, where everyone wants to win. I’ll do my best to help the team achieve the best results that can be achieved, but the Champions League won’t be an obsession.

“Three-game ban? The club made the appropriate assessments and my decision to come here certainly didn’t depend on the duration of by ban, which I’ll respect without any problems and controversy.”
