Gianluigi Buffon is expected to terminate his contract with Parma and announce his retirement from football at the age of 45.

Arguably the greatest goalkeeper in the history of the sport, Buffon had hoped to continue until his current contract expires in June 2024.

However, injuries have increased over the past season and Parma’s failure to make it to promotion was a disappointment.

There had also been lucrative proposals from the Saudi Pro League this summer, but Sky Sport Italia transfer pundit Gianluca Di Marzio claims a decision has been made.

Buffon is set to terminate the Parma contract by mutual consent and announce his retirement, having turned 45 in January.

He started his career in the Parma youth academy and came full circle in 2021 as a free agent, having also represented Juventus twice and Paris Saint-Germain in the 2018-19 season.

The shot-stopper amassed 657 Serie A appearances, 124 in the Champions League and a record 176 senior caps for Italy.
