Buffon responds to questions over his desire to continue playing

Gianluigi Buffon has insisted categorically that he no longer has any desire to return to playing football in a recent double interview alongside current Italy no. 1 Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The 45-year-old announced his retirement as a player this summer, ending a 28-year career as a professional.

A few weeks afterwards, Buffon was appointed to Luciano Spalletti’s coaching staff with the national team set-up, taking on the role of Delegation Chief, a position that had previously been held by Gianluca Vialli until December 2022.

However, having spent time away with Italy during the international break, Buffon claims that he has come to realise that retiring was the right decision for him.

Asked whether he wants to get back out onto the pitch, Buffon responded: “No, not really. I was satisfied with football, watching them train recently and seeing them dive all over the place, I never had the slightest desire to return.”

He continued: “I’m delighted with my choice and I know that’s not the case for everyone, I’m super happy with this choice.”
