Former Italy international Gianluigi Buffon recalled the win on penalties against France at the 2006 World Cup. ‘I was happy because it was over, then I realised that it was the most important night of my career’.
The Azzurri lifted the World Cup under Marcello Lippi in 2006, when Buffon was on the winning side in a penalty shootout against France.
The former Juventus goalkeeper, who re-joined Parma in Serie B ahead of 2021-22, is still going strong at 43.
The former Azzurri shot stopper is capped 176 times and admitted the biggest moment of his career came in the Azzurri shirt.
“The responsibilities you have during a World Cup are enormous,” Buffon told 433. “You can’t enjoy the event and the wins.
“After the win against France, I was happy because it was over, then, with the cup in hand, I realised that it was the most important night in my career as a footballer. It made me even more proud.”
