The Gran Gala del Calcio was held tonight, with Maurizio Sarri named best Coach and Gianluigi Buffon best player.

The awards are basically the Italian football equivalent of the Oscars, naming the best performers from the past season.

Cagliari goalkeeper Alessio Cragno was named as Serie B’s best youngster for last season, thanks to his performances for Benevento.

Napoli Coach Maurizio Sarri wasn’t present, but his award for best Coach was accepted by Edoardo De Laurentiis.

With Napoli-Juventus on Friday, Juve legend Alessandro Del Piero received a special prize for the best goal in the history of the fixture

The best goalkeeper award went to Gianluigi Buffon, with the defence made up of Dani Alves, Kalidou Koulibaly, Leonardo Bonucci and Dani Alves.

Roma’s Radja Nainggolan, Napoli captain Marek Hamsik and Miralem Pjanic of Juventus were named the best midfield for the past year.

In a 4-3-3 formation, the attack was formed by Paulo Dybala, Gonzalo Higuain and Dries Mertens.

Gianluigi Buffon was named as the best player, and made some jokes in his acceptance speech.

“Now I know why we went out against Sweden,” the Italy captain said, to laughs from the audience.

“I’m happy and proud. I never thought I’d get this kind of trophy, and I’ll hold tight to it because I’ve never won best youngster!”
