Italy legend Gigi Buffon feels José Mourinho ‘made two miracles in Europe’ at Roma, but ‘expectations in the league were higher’ so Daniele De Rossi is a ‘smart move.’
Buffon and De Rossi played together for several years with Italy’s national team and even won the World Cup with the Azzurri in 2006.
Now that the ex-Roma star has been appointed to replace Mourinho in his childhood club, Buffon was asked what his former teammate could give to the Giallorossi.
“There could not be a better choice for Roma at such a moment. It’s a smart move,” the former Juventus and PSG star told Gazzetta.
“It’s a beautiful, fascinating and perhaps a bit risky adventure, like those I liked. I’ve almost always based my decisions on emotions and courage. I liked to prove myself and the same goes for Daniele. When you already know the environment well, you are already a step forward. Of course, more is needed, but Daniele is a special man and it’s an important chance for him.”
De Rossi is a product of Roma Academy and played 616 games at a senior level with the Giallorossi as a footballer, scoring 63 goals. Buffon feels the ex-midfielder could not reject an offer from his ex-club.
“It’s hard to say no. Daniele has gained a little experience already, and if you are convinced that you can handle a certain pressure, then most of the job is done,” he said.
“The most difficult part in Rome is managing the emotional part.”
Roma announced Mourinho’s sacking and De Rossi’s appointment on Tuesday and the ex-midfielder has already taken charge of his first training session in charge of the Giallorossi.
“Mourinho made two miracles in Europe, but in the league, expectations were higher,” said Buffon.
“Now Daniele must pass on certain concepts to the team and prove to be credible. I am sure he will make it.”
