Gianluigi Buffon turns 44 next month, but the Parma goalkeeper has no intention of retiring yet. ‘I’d like to play in Mexico or the United States, but I’d already have stopped if I had the Champions League.’

The World Cup winner lifted the most prestigious trophy in football in 2006 with Italy, beating France in a penalty shoot-out during the Final.

He decided to leave Juventus over the summer for a return to where it all started at Parma, even thought they had been relegated to Serie B.

Although his 44th birthday is in January, SuperGigi is in no rush to hang up his gloves.

“I would like to play in Mexico or the United States,” Buffon told TUDN.

“These are experiences I would like to try, but we’ll see what happens. If you ask me what I’ll do in future, the truth is I don’t yet know if it’ll be as a manager or a coach. Knowing me, what I do want now is to keep improving.”

Buffon has won almost every major club competition he played in, except for the Champions League, losing the Final three times with Juve in 2003, 2015 and 2017.

“Not winning the Champions League keeps my competitive spirit alive. Perhaps if I had won the Champions League, I might’ve already retired, because I would have no more important objectives to reach.”

  1. Let him keep playing. He still loves it and has the passion and we fans have no right to judge him. Love him!

  2. I have always had the greatest respect and admiration for Buffon. Unfortunately the last few years have revealed a bit of a flaw in his character, and he has allowed vanity to rule his judgment. He should have retired at 40.
