Italy are not at the World Cup in Qatar, but 2006 winner Gianluigi Buffon has said he is going to cheer on a very special team in the tournament.
The Parma goalkeeper, who continues to play in Serie B just shy of his 45th birthday, spoke to the media after meeting with Pope Francis to prepare the Match for Peace in Rome.
“As usual, when Italy are not there, I try to follow the sides where my club teammates or friends play, or those who are traditionally the underdogs,” said Buffon.
“In this case, the nation I always support is Cameroon. They have a special place in my heart.”
Buffon decided to become a goalkeeper after watching Cameroon play in the 1990 World Cup and becoming inspired by their shot-stopper Thomas N’Kono.
He was so grateful to this figure that he even named his son Thomas in honour of N’Kono.
The African nation are in World Cup Group G along with Switzerland, Serbia and Brazil.
Their current goalkeeper is already plying his trade in Serie A with Inter, namely Andre Onana.
Buffon has a contract with Parma that runs to June 2024 and has no intention of hanging up his gloves yet.
“For now, I still enjoy myself on the pitch and think I give my contribution. When I am no longer able to play or motivate myself at this level, I will think of doing something that excites me.
“I have no idea if that will be as a coach or director, it’s about having the humility to prepare and learn.”
He probably thinks he’ll play for Italy in 2038.
