The Italian midfielder has recently returned from a seven-month ban for gambling and has been included in Italy’s preliminary 30-man squad list ahead of Euro 2024.

Talking during a Serie C event on Monday night, Buffon spoke about Fagioli’s call-up and the controversies that Spalletti’s decision has created in the country.

Buffon defends Italy midfielder: ‘Nobody really cares about it’

“It’s the typical righteousness. Deep inside, nobody really cares about it,” said Buffon.

“It’s just a way to cause an easy controversy. The lad has apologised and paid for it.”

Fagioli spoke at a press conference on Monday, and Spalletti explained why he had decided to call the Juventus midfielder.

“These 10 days are fundamental for Fagioli,” said the CT.

“Some complain because players are tired at the end of the season. When we have one who is rested [Fagioli] it’s not fine anyway.”
