Italy and Juventus legend Gigi Buffon believes Gigio Donnarumma’s starting status at PSG is not in danger and feels the ex-Milan keeper is ‘strong enough’ to deal with recent criticism.

Donnarumma was sent off in PSG’s latest Ligue 1 clash against Le Havre on Sunday and had been blamed for goals conceded against Monaco and Newcastle.

Buffon, who has recently been appointed as Italy’s Delegation Chief, defended his compatriot during an interview with Sky Sport Italia.

“I wouldn’t say he is no longer a starter at PSG. I think it’s just a moment,” said Buffon.

“Like all great goalkeepers, unfortunately, he has more responsibilities than he should have. He has had a couple of difficult moments and he’s being criticised, but I think he is strong enough to go ahead.”

Donnarumma was defended by his PSG coach Luis Enrique on Sunday after receiving a straight red card after just ten minutes against Le Havre.

The 24-year-old has kept nine clean sheets in 19 appearances in the French capital this season, conceding 18 goals.

Former Italy and Inter goalkeeper Walter Zenga also defended Donnarumma in his latest interview with Il Corriere dello Sport saying that the ex-Milan goalkeeper does not risk being replaced by Guglielmo Vicario between Italy’s sticks in the near future.
