Poland coach Jerzy Brzeczek ‘can’t wait’ to face Italy in the Nations League, as despite assuring the Azzurri deserve praise for their run, his team ‘can beat even the best.’

The match kicks off at 19.45 UK time in Gdansk on Sunday.

“Without doubt, Italy deserve praise, as they have won 14 of their last 16 games,” said the coach in his press conference.

“Having said that, we can’t wait for this match to arrive, because I am satisfied with how my players are doing in the build-up. I feel more than reassured looking at the mentality and the atmosphere around my team.

“We overcame difficult moments, a victory against a big nation would be encouraging, and I am convinced those results will arrive. We’re in a period of form where we can beat even the best.”

Poland lost 1-0 to the Netherlands in the opening Nations League match last month, but crushed Finland 5-1 in a friendly on Wednesday.

“We’ve made significant progress over the last couple of years. We might not at Italy’s level, but I am satisfied with what we’ve achieved so far.”

Brzeczek confirmed Lukasz Fabianski will start in goal against Italy, while Juventus shot-stopper Wojciech Szczesny is reserved for the next game with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Piotr Zielinski had to pull out, as the Napoli midfielder contracted Coronavirus.

“It’s a big loss, but we have many players and whoever steps on to the field will be well-prepared.”
