Marcelo Brozovic insists he ‘never wanted to even talk to another club’ during negotiations to extend his Inter contract, even though he was free to do so.

The midfielder’s deal was due to expire on June 30, so he was technically able to negotiate with other clubs for a free transfer.

However, he signed a new contract today until 2026, earning a reported €6.5m per season plus bonuses.

“I am truly very happy to have signed this contract extension with Inter, as I strongly wanted this and the club knew that,” Brozovic told Inter TV.

There were reports of interest from the likes of Barcelona, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur.

“I never wanted to even talk to another club, out of respect for Inter and its fans. I always told my agents that I didn’t want to speak to any other club, unless Inter said outright they didn’t want to renew my contract.”

The Croatia international has been at San Siro since January 2015 and his importance became even more evident with recent poor results in his absence due to a calf injury.

“It has always been an honour and a privilege for me to play with Inter. I always respected and loved this club, and that will be the case forever.

“We always play to win and I am certain we will give our all to win the Scudetto and Coppa Italia this season.”

The fans never really doubted that Brozovic would remain either, which only intensified the rapport he has with the supporters.

“The Inter fans have always cared for me. I can’t wait to get back on the pitch and resume celebrating with them.”
