Assistant manager Mauro Tassotti had been the favourite to take over, but several sources now suggest he is considered to be to blame for the situation too.
Instead, Brocchi could be promoted from the Primavera youth team to the main job for the rest of the season.
He was teammates with Inzaghi and took over the Primavera bench from Inzaghi last summer.
It would only be in a caretaker capacity, as Vincenzo Montella of Fiorentina and ex-Zenit Coach Luciano Spalletti are courted for next season.
When asked about these reports this morning, Brocchi did not confirm or deny his interest.
“Would I accept a proposal to train Milan? I am a club man. I want what is best for Milan. I’m very proud of what I’m doing with the Primavera and it’s great work,” he told Sky Sport Italia.
“Nobody has spoken to me about it yet. I repeat, I am the Primavera Coach and I think that will continue to be the case.”
