Brighton and Hove Albion were beaten 5-1 at home this evening by Everton, but it is far from the heaviest defeat that Italian tactician Roberto De Zerbi has suffered.

The Premier League hammering came just days after the coach enjoyed his biggest career victory, beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 6-0 on April 29.

This 5-1 loss is a painful one and dents Brighton’s hopes of qualifying for Europe, but De Zerbi has plenty of experience with similar setbacks.

His Shakhtar Donetsk were beaten 5-0 by Real Madrid in the Champions League in October 2021, while there were two 6-2 defeats in Serie A at different clubs.

The first was in March 2018 when Benevento capitulated away to Lazio, then in December the same month his Sassuolo lost 6-2 at home to Atalanta.

Benevento were also on the end of a 5-1 home defeat to Lazio in October 2017.

De Zerbi’s record at Brighton this season is now 17 victories, six draws and 11 defeats in all competition.

  1. Everton were simply the hungrier team. Brighton players never seemed up for it at any stage.
