Brescia are relegated to Serie C amid shameful scenes, as the Serie B play-out with Cosenza was suspended when ultras threw fireworks at the field and attempted a pitch invasion.

On the same day that Roma fans harassed and abused Europa League referee Anthony Taylor at an airport in Budapest, the Brescia fans caused their Serie B relegation play-out to be abandoned.

Cosenza had won the first leg 1-0 on May 25 and Brescia had been leading 1-0 at the Stadio Rigamonti this evening until Meroni nodded in a late equaliser in stoppages.

That result dooms Brescia to relegation, but the final whistle was not blown, because the ultras in the Curva Nord rushed the field and others threw fireworks and smoke bombs onto the pitch.

Referee Davide Massa had to quickly suspend the match as players from both teams rushed back into the locker rooms, while police tried to calm the situation down.

There was still 90 seconds left on the clock and the teams were warming up to resume when news emerged some Brescia ultras from outside the stadium were throwing fireworks into the away section of Cosenza fans.

The referee decided it was not safe to continue and blew the final whistle.

The problems continued, as for well over an hour after the game was finally ended, both teams and circa 1,000 Cosenza fans remained trapped in the stadium while Brescia ultras tried to break down the gates and set fire to cars.
