Marco Borriello has confirmed that he will stay at SPAL after apologising for his sarcastic show of applause to supporters.
Borriello was whistled by SPAL fans when he was substituted during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with fellow strugglers Verona, provoking the striker into an apparent reaction.
The 35-year-old then refused to acknowledge his side’s Curva after the game, prompting several members of their support to insult him.

However, he wrote in a subsequent Instagram post: “Hi everyone, I wanted to make my true thoughts known to the SPAL fans and all my fans, who continue to follow me with great affection.
“I’m very sorry for what happened on Sunday with the Curva. The gesture of applause was only dictated by nervousness from our lack of results!
“Despite this difficult period, I keep thinking and I’m strongly convinced that the words I said in August, when I decided to come to Ferrara, are absolutely true, even now: I’m convinced that SPAL can stay up!
“It would be an exceptional achievement for a newly-promoted team, who hadn’t been in the top flight for 49 years.
“I’ll try with all my might to make a contribution, like I’ve often done in my career, by scoring goals (which makes me very happy), fighting to defend the honour of this shirt and being on the pitch or the bench to support my teammates.
“I’ll stay here in January because this is what I want, plus I also feel the faith of the club and their coaching staff.
“I’m sure that they all remain united and are working with the enthusiasm that has always surrounded the team,
“We’ll all be able to reach the finish line. I wish everyone a good week and, as always, go SPAL.”
Borriello has scored just once for the new boys since arriving from Cagliari in August, and a return to Sardinia would be his only option if he was to leave Ferrara.
