Marco Borriello engaged in a war of words with his own club SPAL after they accused him of not caring about their fortunes.
The Ferrara-based club is battling against relegation in its first Serie A campaign for 50 years.
“I speak gladly about those who are currently sweating buckets to secure safety, who play 95 minutes on Sunday, come to the stadium to cheer on their teammates, despite never actually playing,” said director of sport Davide Vagnati at a dinner with the SPAL ultras groups.

“If Borriello decides to give us a hand, then good, otherwise we’ll do without him, just as we have done thus far.”
Borriello hit back with a statement and image on Instagram, showing a copy of a medical certificate after tests on his calf just 10 days ago.
“Just to clarify, this is the result of the latest test that certifies my injury that I sustained in December. It’s only right that people know the truth and avoid using me to make their own point.
“I hope to return to fitness in time to give the right support to the team for a deserved stay in Serie A.”
