Marco Borriello explains why he had a strange row with David Pizarro over the Roma penalty. “He changed his mind!”

There were odd scenes when the Giallorossi were awarded a last-minute spot-kick in their 2-1 victory at Lecce this evening.

Borriello was preparing to take the kick when Pizarro pushed him aside, prompting Daniele De Rossi to lead the striker away.

“Pizarro is the designated penalty taker, chosen by the Coach. He gave me the ball and asked if I wanted to take it instead,” explained Borriello.

“Pizarro is the designated penalty taker, chosen by the Coach. He gave me the ball and asked if I wanted to take it instead,” explained Borriello.

“I was happy to do it, as a forward always wants the opportunity to score more goals. So I was getting ready, but then he suddenly changed his mind and felt ready to take it again. Anyway, the important thing is that we won.

“This victory means a lot, as in other games we tended to lose in the final 20 minutes, whereas this time round we fought back to get all three points. It signifies our growth.”

Roma will now make their Champions League debut under new Coach Vincenzo Montella, as Claudio Ranieri oversaw a 3-2 home defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk.

“We've got to take it one game at a time. There is a very important match on Tuesday, which is crucial for Roma's future. We'll give it our all and believe we can win,” said Borriello.
