Borja Valero has retired from football and the former Fiorentina midfielder thanked for the many messages of affection. ‘We’re proud of being adopted Florentines’.

The former Inter midfielder returned to the Viola to finish his career at the Artemio Franchi, and 268 of his 518 games as a professional footballer came in Serie A.

He spent five seasons at Fiorentina and announced his farewell on Instagram, when the 36-year-old admitted he wished to have played his last game under a ‘crowded Curva Fiesole’.

The many messages of affection made him return to social media to thank the fans for adopting his family.

He posted a photo of a banner from Curva Fiesole Firenze saying: “We are proud of having you in the city. Thanks to the Valero family.”

Borja Valero wrote on Instagram: “We are proud to be adopted Florentines. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who in one way or another have shown me their affection, you are fantastic, thank you.”

His wife, Rocio Rodriguez, also sent a message to the Fiorentina fans.

“We are honoured to have you in our life. We cannot explain in words everything we are experiencing,” she wrote.

“Your affection, your messages, fill our hearts. With you guys, everything is easier. Thank you so much.

“As soon as we can, pre-game beer and everyone at Fiesole!”
