Fabio Borini concedes it was “curious” to go from the Under-21 side to the senior Italy squad within a matter of hours.

“It was curious turning up to the hotel with the Under-21 side on Sunday night and then the morning after immediately setting off for Genoa so I could join the senior team,” said the Roma striker.

This is his first call-up for the Azzurri at this level and he hopes to make his debut in Wednesday’s friendly against the USA.

“I hope there will be space for me tomorrow as well. It would be wonderful for my career, as reaching the Nazionale is an honour and a privilege that not everyone gets to experience.”

In the summer Borini was picked up by Parma as a free agent after Chelsea opted not to renew his contract.

“I have positive thoughts and feel great confidence being among this group of champions. It’s also pleasing in a way to be the youngest in the group.

“I have to thank Luis Enrique, as he has given me so much this season, putting faith in me even after the injury.”

There were problems in the Roma camp at the weekend, as Daniele De Rossi was frozen out for the Atalanta game when he turned up a few minutes late for a team meeting.

“Luis Enrique is inflexible when it comes to the rules, which were set at the start of the season. I think he is someone of great character and charisma.

“Have I ever been late for a team meeting? Unlikely, I always arrive 20 minutes early…”
