Leonardo Bonucci’s wife Martina Maccari reveals that the Juventus and Italy defender wants to become a coach at the end of his playing career.

The 34-year-old sees his contract expire in June 2024 and seems to have clear ideas about what he wants to do after hanging his boots.

“I have no doubts that he will remain in the world of football. It’s his life. He loves the pitch and he wants to become a coach,” his wife Martina Maccari told Tuttosport newspaper.

Torino is our home, because we’ve become a family here. I’ve never felt at home in my hometown, but I’ve found my dimension here. If it’s necessary, I will follow Leo, but our home is here.”

Bonucci had also told The Athletic a few months ago that becoming a coach would be his main target after the end of his playing career. He and Chiellini have formed one of the most iconic defensive partnerships in the history of Italian football. They led Italy to win Euro 2020 in the summer and have lifted many trophies at Juventus.

The Bianconeri captain could leave Turin in June, playing the last season of his career in the MLS.

“We have a close bond with Chiellini and his family, our children have grown up together,” Bonucci’s wife said.

Bonucci moved to Juventus in 2010 and left the club in 2017, joining Milan for just one season. He returned to Turin the following summer, but his family had remained in town rather than moving to the capital of Lombardy.

“Leo has no regrets about his year in Milan. He grew as a man, but he returned home when he signed for Juventus again,” Martina Maccari said.

“I’ve always backed him but, even today, he keeps telling me that I should have made him think more.”
