Leonardo Bonucci admits he had a “Sword of Damocles” hanging over him in the form of a yellow card during Italy’s defeat to Ireland.

The Juventus defender is one card away from suspension and would therefore miss the Round of 16 clash with Spain if he had been booked tonight.

“It’s normal that having a Sword of Damocles over your head is a problem, but it’s our duty to always give our best,” the defender told Sky Sport Italia.

“It’s normal that having a Sword of Damocles over your head is a problem, but it’s our duty to always give our best,” the defender told Sky Sport Italia.

Many expected him to be rested to avoid such a risk, but instead he played the entire match.

“We could’ve done more tonight, but compliments to Ireland for their determination, grit and physicality. We made too many mistakes.

“What we didn’t do enough of today was playing the style of football we know how. The pitch didn’t help, but that mustn’t be an alibi.

“We must get back on to the track we were on before this game so the Euros can continue.

“There is always something to learn from a defeat. From tonight’s we learned that in terms of determination and grit we need to give more, while we were also not very sharp in our passing.”
