Retired defender Leonardo Bonucci reveals he dreamed of playing in EURO 2024 before hanging his boots this summer.

Former Juventus defender Bonucci dreamed of playing in this summer’s Euros before retiring, but he was unable to convince the Azzurri CT Luciano Spalletti during six-month spells at Union Berlin and Fenerbahce.

“I dreamed of finishing my career with Italy and Juventus in a different way, but one has to adapt,” Bonucci said on Thursday.

“You have to accept and be prepared to change. I wanted to finish my career at 37, but I wanted to play in the Euros.”

Bonucci, 37, announced his retirement only a few weeks ago.

Three years ago today, he won Euro 2020 with Italy, scoring in the Final against England at Wembley Stadium.

During the same interview, Bonucci blamed Massimiliano Allegri for his Juventus exit, which he described as “a joke”.
