Leonardo Bonucci said Italy “can’t kill off” games and reassured Daniele De Rossi after a 1-0 win over Bulgaria.

“We were more determined from the start and you could see our attitude. We did well to take the lead, but still lack the clinical finishing to kill off this type of game,” the Juventus defender told Rai Sport.

“Nonetheless, this week we have taken home six crucial points to qualify for Euro 2016.”

Marco Verratti seemed to do better in midfield without Andrea Pirlo by his side.

“Marco plays at Paris Saint-Germain alongside great champions, so he’s accustomed to the pressure.

“When put in the right circumstances to express their talent, the young players do really well. They must have fun with their football and not feel the pressure so much. We must always remember this sport is entertainment for the players and the fans.

“Malta focused only on defending, whereas Bulgaria at least tried to play some good football. We did well to close down the spaces and create many chances, but only scored on a penalty.

“When we played them in Sofia, it was the same kind of approach. We know they have talented forwards and controlled them well.”

De Rossi converted the penalty, but was also sent off for a reaction foul and it’s not the first time his temper has erupted.

“Unfortunately that’s what Daniele is like, but we love him in good and bad times. He’s a great player, a lovely guy and we always need someone with his grit.”

Gigi Buffon performed two crucial saves in the rare occasions Bulgaria came forward.

“It was his 150th cap for Italy. Gigi is a great champion and we hope that we can rely on him for the foreseeable future. Another 150 games? Maybe that’s too much…”
