Former Italy and Juventus captain Leonardo Bonucci has confirmed that one of his main targets for the remaining months of the 2023-24 season is to be called up to Luciano Spalletti’s Italy squad for the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany.

The eight-time Serie A winner last represented the Azzurri in a 2-0 loss against Austria in an international friendly under Roberto Mancini in November 2022.

Since then, he has gone on to leave Juventus, joining Bundesliga side Union Berlin on a free transfer in the summer. Bonucci has been on the move again since then, joining Fenerbahce after a disappointing few months, limited in opportunities, in the German capital.

However, despite a turbulent year at club level, Bonucci remains keen to rejoin the national team set-up by the time the Euros roll around in the summer.

In an interview with Fenerbahce’s club website on Tuesday, Bonucci confirmed his ambitions to make the final Italy squad for Euro 2024.

“My goal is to be there, I had a meeting with Spalletti before the transfer,” Bonucci said. He continued: “I know it is not an easy tournament. There are strong countries, but we are the reigning champions. Let’s go again in Germany.

“We will go to defend our title, I also want to be there as part of the national team, everybody wants to be there. I will give all my best if I am included.”
