Italy legend Leonardo Bonucci has backed his former colleague Gianluigi Buffon in his prediction that Napoli will finish the 2024-25 Serie A season in the top two positions under Antonio Conte.

The former Juventus stalwarts expect that the appointment of Conte, as well as the recent signing of Alessandro Buongiorno from Torino, will push the team to new heights after a thoroughly disappointing defence of their Serie A title in 2023-24.

Bonucci backs Napoli for top two finish under Conte

“I totally agree,” Bonucci told Sky Sport Italia when asked about Buffon’s claim that Napoli will finish the 2024-25 season in the top two.

He continued: “Napoli couldn’t have made a better choice after the year they’ve had. They’ve taken on a world-class coach, he teaches you everything about football and gives you the right knowledge.

“The squad is strong and full of quality. Being able to work with them all week, he (Conte) will do really well.”

Speaking from experience, Bonucci also backed Conte to help new signing Buongiorno to become one of the best defenders in the world.

“Alessandro couldn’t have made a better choice, working with Conte is important to become one of the best defenders in the world.

“He has the right characteristics and the quality to be able to do it. He’s intelligent, humble and strong.”

Napoli confirmed their purchase of Buongiorno on July 13, securing the international on a five-year contract, which will run until the summer of 2029.

Included in the 25-year-old’s contract is a €70m release clause, which will become valid after three years at the Stadio Maradona.
