Leonardo Bonucci assures he is ‘in peace’ after announcing his retirement and is confident ‘football will give me more in the future.’

The defender decided to hang up his boots this summer after experiences at Juventus, Milan, Union Berlin and Fenerbahce.

“I am happy with what I experienced, the right moment has come to say enough and I am in peace with myself,” Bonucci told Sky Sport Italia.

“In any case, football will give me more in the future. Right now, I want to take time to enjoy time with my family, as I need to make up for all those years spent on pitches around Europe.”

The veteran had hoped to extend his career until getting one last special day for Italy at EURO 2024, but did not play enough to warrant a place in the squad.

Bonucci watching Juventus

Meanwhile, Bonucci is keeping a close eye on his former club Juventus, who are set to appoint new coach Thiago Motta.

“I believe Thiago Motta will bring a style of football made of intensity and technique, just like he showed at Bologna over the last two years.

“I hope he can bring Juventus back to where they deserve to be.”
