Boniek: ‘Clubs should be allowed to spend’

Former Juventus and Roma midfielder Zbigniew Boniek dismisses Financial Fair Play – “it’s hard to say ‘you’re rich but you can’t buy a Rolex’…”

Clubs from the English Premier League have spent big this summer, as have Milan, and there is talk that Paris Saint-Germain could spend €222m on Neymar.

Clubs from the English Premier League have spent big this summer, as have Milan, and there is talk that Paris Saint-Germain could spend €222m on Neymar.

“The existing rules are already clear,” Boniek, now head of the Polish FA, told La Repubblica.

“But if a President does everything right, he doesn’t avoid tax and he has a lot of money, how can you limit their spending?

“It’s hard to say to someone: ‘you’re rich, but you can’t buy a rolex’. The only important thing is to prevent clubs running up debts.

“One thing is certain, any limit at a regulatory level only makes reducing the gap more difficult.

“Legia Warsaw have a turnover of €20m, Real Madrid have €500m. For Real it’s easy to increase revenue to €550m or €600m, we see it every year, but for Legia it’s hard to even get to €21m.

“That’s how it’s been with Financial Fair Play since it was set up, it’s only hurt the smaller clubs.”
