Giacomo Bonaventura says Vincenzo Montella has given Milan “the joy of playing with the ball”.

The Coach took over at San Siro this summer, and his passing approach has impressed as the Rossoneri have risen to join-second in Serie A.

“I like it, because I get on the ball a lot and I’m an active participant in building play,” Bonaventura told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Maybe it’s a less flashy job, but I enjoy it.

“We’re coming off disappointing seasons, Montella has brought the joy of playing with the ball. He cares about the mental side, but 80 per cent of the important work has been on the pitch.

“I expected to find a bit more chaos, but Montella has been good at isolating us. I thought he’d come in an overturn everything, instead he’s moved gradually and it’s helped keep a relaxed atmosphere.

“He was right to do it, but I thought he’d have been… tougher. He brings added value, and the proof of that is where we are with more or less the same team as a year ago.

“He has arranged things on the pitch and we’re changing our mentality.”

The Diavolo face Juventus at the weekend, could they be surprise Scudetto contenders?

“Juve are on a higher level, but the gap with the rest has decreased. My regret is having arrived at Milan when we’re not in Europe, but this is the right year to return.

“So the Juve game is impossible? Not at all. We can win because it’s a one-off game, we’re at home and they’ll force us to give 100 per cent.

“And we haven’t been far off the level of top teams so far.”

Across San Siro, Inter captain Mauro Icardi caused controversy with the release of his autobiography.

“If I wrote an autobiography it would be really boring!” Bonaventura laughed.

“I don’t have many stories to tell, I’ll win something first and then we can talk.”
