This was his first return to the Stadio Azzurri d’Italia since the summer transfer and there was a large banner to greet him: ‘Your colours have changed, but you remain in our hearts.’

“The affection from the people of Bergamo, not just tonight but throughout my time here, was amazing. There are few fans like this in Italy,” he told Sky Sport Italia after refusing to celebrate the brace.

“This is football, as there were two shots practically in front of an open goal, so I couldn’t even miss those!

“I didn’t want to hurt Atalanta, but I remain convinced the fans are still happy for me and what I’m doing in my career.

“I hope Milan can soon challenge for the top of the table and get back into Europe. Italy? Tomorrow there are the call-ups, it’s always wonderful to play for the Nazionale. We’ll see.”
