It’s reported the bomb was inside a car parked in the Piazza Mancini area, near to the arena.

Fans were walking along those roads to reach the stadium ahead of the game, which is open to 25 per cent capacity.

Someone passing by spotted the suspicious item inside the parked Smart car and called the authorities.

They intervened and the bomb squad performed a controlled explosion just before 17.00 UK time.

It is not yet confirmed whether the item was a bomb.

Italy opened their Euro 2020 campaign with a 3-0 win against Turkey, also played at the Stadio Olimpico, on Friday evening.

Tonight will be their second Group A fixture.
