Bologna are through to the Serie B promotion play-off Final despite a dramatic 3-2 home defeat to Avellino.

Delio Rossi’s men will face either Vicenza or Pescara in the two-legged Final.

The Rossoblu had won the first leg 1-0 at the Stadio Partenio, but in the play-offs away goals are irrelevant and extra time not required.

If the two teams are level on points (in this case three each) and on goals (3-3), the side placed better in the regular season will go through – in this case Bologna.

That meant Avellino needed to win by two clear goals in order to qualify for the Final.

Avellino took a shock early lead at the Stadio Dall’Ara, as Marcello Trotta burst between centre-backs to blast through Junior Da Costa’s attempted save.

Robert Acquafresca ran on to a splendid Nenad Krsticic through ball to go clear on goal for the equaliser, but Trotta completed his brace with a smart turn.

Avellino goalkeeper Pierluigi Frattali performed a series of excellent saves on Acquafresca and Karim Laribi, but it was his astonishing howler that gifted Bologna the goal for 2-2.

Frattali ran outside his box for what seemed to be a simple clearance, horribly scuffed the ball and Daniele Cacia lobbed it into an empty net.

Avellino needed to win by two clear goals and with six minutes remaining Moussa Kone scored an absolutely stunning volley from the edge of the box.

The Irpini so nearly got that extra goal at the 93rd minute, but Luigi Castaldi’s half-volley remarkably smacked against the crossbar to bounce back out.
