Bologna took another step forward in the redevelopment of the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara today, signing an agreement for the design of the new-look arena.

As building a new stadium is almost impossible with Italian laws as they currently stand, many clubs are following Juventus, Udinese and Atalanta by taking on existing arenas from the local council with a long lease.

They can then revamp the structures to bring them up to a modern standard.

As building a new stadium is almost impossible with Italian laws as they currently stand, many clubs are following Juventus, Udinese and Atalanta by taking on existing arenas from the local council with a long lease.

They can then revamp the structures to bring them up to a modern standard.

Bologna have long been working on the project and today signed a partnership agreement with Ficantieri Infrastructure “for the design and execution of the redevelopment and modernisation works of the Renato Dall’Ara Stadium.

“At a time in which football, as other industrial sectors in Italy, requires investments and strategies to make a new start, this cooperation represents an important initiative to deliver the Club and the city of Bologna a modern and functional infrastructure to meet the current needs of the audience and the business partners.”

The plans include providing a roof for all the seats around the arena, plus the introduction of a lounge, terrace, VIP boxes, restaurant and café.

The capacity should decrease from 31,000 to 27,000, but all areas will have disabled access and the crowd will be moved much closer to the pitch.

President Joey Saputo is confident the work will be finalised within five years.
