Bologna President Joey Saputo has been made an honorary citizen of the Italian city after the Italo-Canadian helped them qualify for the Champions League.

The Rossoblu shocked everyone last season to secure fifth place in Serie A, which was worth qualification for the new and expanded Champions League thanks to Italy’s extra spot earned via an overall stronger coefficient than other nations.

With the tournament set to kick off next week, Saputo is in town and met the Mayor Matteo Lepore, where he was made an honorary citizen of Bologna.

“It is an honour and a source of great pride,” Saputo told reporters.

The club President was accompanied at the ceremony by his wife Carmie, son Luca, Bologna players Lorenzo De Silvestri, Riccardo Orsolini, Lewis Ferguson and Federico Ravaglia.

The Canadian businessman also founded MLS club CF Montreal in 1992 and purchased a majority stake in Bologna in 2014.

His father immigrated to Canada from Sicily in the 1950s.
