Bologna players held a minute silence during their training session on Tuesday to pay tribute to the victims of the 1980 terror attack at the city’s train station.

On the morning of August 2, 42 years ago, a bomb exploded, claiming the lives of 85 people and wounding 200 more.

It is considered the deadliest terrorist attack in Italian history and Bologna’s football club and its staff made sure to remember the victims at 9.25 a.m. BST which was the time the bomb exploded.

The explosion happened in the air-conditioned waiting room, where many travellers had gathered due to the August heat in the city.

Due to the sheer scale of the injuries, there were not enough emergency vehicles on hand to transport people to hospital and passers by had to deliver first aid.

The bombing occurred during one of the darkest periods in Italian history known as “Years of Lead,” which are considerd to have lasted from the 1960s to the 1980s.

The neo-fascist group NAR (Armed Revolutionary Nuclei) were sentenced following the bombing.
