“We’ve got to turn the tide that has seen us get negative results since December,” said De Leo in his press conference.

“I think the performances have been decent, even if we had some issues to resolve, for example we should’ve been sharper in our finishing and clinical when we do get chances to score.”

Mattia Bani and Nicola Sansone are suspended, with Mitchell Dijks, Stefano Denswil, Gary Medel and Ladislav Krejci injured, so there is a shortage of defensive options in particular.

“In a way, always playing the same back four is helpful, as they get to know each other better and we have seen some improvements. Obviously, we need to be even more concentrated going forward and keep the whole team tight.

“Sansone’s absence is a serious problem we need to reflect on. We’ve got solutions, such as Musa Barrow, Rodrigo Palacio or even Mattias Svanberg. We certainly won’t change our way of playing, although of course Sansone brings a great deal of balance between attack and defence.”

SPAL climbed off the foot of the Serie A table with a shock win away to Atalanta.

“They’ve been playing with the same coach for many years and therefore have a clear identity, which can help them in difficult moments,” concluded De Leo.

“SPAL are feeling more confident now and we need the right approach.”
