After seemingly being on the verge of joining Cagliari, Young Boys midfielder Michel Aebischer is instead now close to Bologna at a cost of €4m.

The interest in Aebischer had been going throughout the January transfer window and started last month with initial approaches.

However, Sportitalia and Sky Sport Italia now report that Bologna have dived in to intercept negotiations and clinch a deal very quickly.

This is partly due to the different status in the table, as it would be a loan with option to buy, activated if the club stays in Serie A for the 2022-23 season.

Cagliari are currently struggling, whereas Bologna are fairly comfortable in mid-table.

Aebischer was not eager to be involved in a relegation battle and Young Boys would also prefer he join someone guaranteed to pay up the transfer fee in the summer.

The Switzerland international turned 25 earlier this month and has seven senior caps for his country.

He worked his way up through the various levels of the Young Boys academy before promotion to the main squad in 2017.

So far this season, Aebischer has played 28 games in all competition for the club, with four goals and nine assists.
