Takehiro Tomiyasu suffered an ankle injury while on international duty, giving Bologna and Tottenham cause for concern.

The 22-year-old has been included in the Japan squad for the Tokyo Olympics but missed the debut game against South Africa on Thursday with an ankle injury.

Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu confirmed Tomiyasu’s injury after the game and said he hopes the defender will be available on Sunday when they meet Mexico.

However, the CT is “not sure” about Tomiyasu’s return date.

Meantime, Bologna and Tottenham are in talks for the 22-year-old who can leave the Stadio Dall’Ara for €20m.

Bologna warn Tottenham about competition for Tomiyasu

According to reports in Italy and England, the two clubs are close to reaching an agreement, but the deal is not done yet.

Il Corriere dello Sport reports Bologna’s medical staff has received little information from their colleagues in Japan, so neither the Rossoblu know how serious the injury is.

Tottenham didn’t want Tomiyasu to join his national team for the Olympics as they were planning to make him move to North London in time for the pre-season.

Report: Romero agrees Tottenham terms, Atalanta resist

The Rome-based paper suggests Tomiyasu’s injury is not an ‘insurmountable barrier’ for Spurs and Bologna, although that could slow the deal.

Tottenham are also in talks with Atalanta to sign Cristian Romero from Atalanta, with whom they have already agreed personal terms.
