The Coach was fired by the Marassi outfit yesterday after taking over in the summer and was believed to have a difficult relationship with Cassano.

However, he defended his work at the club in an interview with Il Secolo XIX.

“I was probably the only Coach in Serie A who spent the last day of the transfer market in Ata Hotel in Milan to help with the closure of my team’s deals,” said Zenga.

“I’ve never held back and I threw body and soul into things regarding Sampdoria.

“If the squad remained like this after the market maybe it’s to my credit, and instead only accusations have come.

“Cassano? I was clear and you knew how it ended, he is a great and I told him that but he’s not in shape.

“These aren’t excuses of mine, just considerations that we will make one day when I come back to talking about the adventure at Samp that has improved me anyway.”
