Zvonimir Boban says “Milan have taken a lot of good players, but no superstars” and “it won’t be easy to win with so many new signings”.

The Rossoneri completely overhauled their squad over the summer, thanks to the investment of new Chinese owners Yonghong Li.

“The favourite for the Scudetto is still Juventus,” Diavolo legend Boban told Blick.

“Milan have taken a lot of good players, but no superstars. It won’t be easy to win with so many new players, but I hope I’m wrong.

“Milan was the best team I played for, there were the three Dutchmen, [Ruud] Gullit, [Frank] Rijkaard and [Marco] Van Basten; but also [Jean-Pierre] Papin, [Dejan] Savicevic and Boban.

“Then there were the best Italians of that era, [Franco] Baresi and [Paolo] Maldini.”

Boban famously kicked a policeman during a Dinamo Zagreb v Red Star Belgrade match, with the riot in the stands proving to be one of the triggers for the Yugoslavian civil war.

“It was a gesture for freedom and against oppression. For many years our country had been oppressed, and when I saw that agent beating that young man so many times I couldn’t resist.

“I’d never been in fights before that.”
