Outgoing FIFA President Sepp Blatter insists there is ‘no corruption’ in the organisation.

The current head of world football’s governing body will step down at an extraordinary congress on February 26 next year, following a major corruption scandal.

“I did it because I wanted to protect Fifa,” Blatter told the BBC of his decision to step down.

“I can protect myself. I am strong enough. I know what I have done, what I have not done, I have my conscience and I know I'm an honest man. I am clean. I am not a worried man

“The institution is not corrupt, there is no corruption in football, there is corruption with individuals. It is the people.

“Somebody must be responsible, but it's not the head of state who is responsible for all of the villains. It's the government also. Tell me what I have done wrong.”

UEFA President Michel Platini is favourite to take over the Presidency, and already has the support of the Italian federation, but Blatter would not comment on the former Juventus midfielder.

“Don't ask the President who is elected to make a comment on the race for the Presidency. I don't mind, it's the congress who will decide, not me.”
