Inter and Italy wing-back Cristiano Biraghi is the centre of controversy after his shin-pads seemed to depict Fascist symbols.

The player received treatment during last night’s Champions League defeat to Barcelona and pulled down his sock to reveal his shin-pads.

Social media users were quick to point out the presence of seemingly Fascist symbols, as a flame with the green, white and red colours of the Italian flag was the icon of the MSI party, the new-Fascist political movement.

It has the Latin inscription ‘Vae Victis’ – beware those who are conquered – with Roman symbolism around it, again a phrase associated with Fascism.

Biraghi has a large chest tattoo with Vae Victis, Roman soldiers and some images of Ancient Roman architecture.
