Napoli sporting director Riccardo Bigon insists the club isn’t trying to stir up controversy after their defeat to Juventus.

The Partenopei were incensed after Martin Caceres’ goal during the game, which the Neapolitans claimed was offside, with club President Aurelio De Laurentiis calling the officials into question, and Coach Rafa Benitez doing similar.

“At this time, it would be good for everyone to bring a bit of balance to the situation,” Bigon said in an interview with Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

“It’s important to emphasise Napoli’s behaviour toward the referees, because we mustn’t forget that for three years we haven’t released statements about referees, and everyone can see that.

“Our team has been one of those with fewest bookings and sendings off in recent seasons, and also Benitez has a very good relationship with the referees.

“Our desire for explanations is because they happened in a particular game with errors that we aren’t blaming on [referee Paolo] Tagliavento, but rather the assistant.

“We simply wanted to point out certain incidents, but our club is not one that seeks controversy.”

Napoli have already completed two transfers in this window, with deals for Manolo Gabbiadini and Ivan Strinic sealed early on, but Bigon says the club is still assessing the market.

“We’re the only team that had purchased two players outright before the window even opened.

“However, it’s normal that we’ll keep our ear to the ground and see if there are any more opportunities for us.

“At the moment there are no negotiations, but it’s our duty to look at the market.

“[Marcelo] Brozovic is interesting, but at the moment there are no negotiations taking place. There’s a lot of spin and rumours, for a lot of reasons, everyone is trying to play their own little game.

“[Matteo] Darmian, [Mattia] Destro and [Giulio] Donati are interesting as they’re young and Italian.

“They’re interesting as targets, but they’re players who belong to other clubs [Torino, Roma and Bayer Leverkusen respectively], and at the moment we’re not trying to do a deal for them so it seems pointless to talk about it.”
