Massimo Maccarone has turned down a summer switch in order to fire Sampdoria back into the top flight.

Doria were relegated last season with Maccarone one of numerous players who didn't live up to their potential.

"I know that I didn't do well and that saddens me a lot," said the January arrival from Palermo.

"They were the poorest four months of my career. I had problems both physically and especially mentally. I wasn't in the right place."

Maccarone, who had to step in for the sold Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini, netted just three goals in 18 League games.

"It's right to not forget the past, but it is also right to think about the present and the future. Our aim is to get back into Serie A and build a great Sampdoria.

"I had the opportunity to move, but it would have been sad to leave a place like this without showing people my value.

"I'm happy to be at Sampdoria."
