West Ham forward Gianluca Scamacca has scored two Premier League goals so far and there are three Italian strikers more prolific than him outside Serie A.

Italy CT Roberto Mancini is desperate to find a long-term replacement for Ciro Immobile who has been struggling with the Azzurri, but remains the best Italian striker in Serie A having scored 188 goals in 300 appearances in Italy’s top flight, the last one against Fiorentina last night.

Mancini complained in September that every top Serie A club has a foreign centre-forward so it’s almost impossible to pick Immobile’s heir in the Italian league short-term.

The Azzurri seem to have reduced options even abroad where Scamacca seems to be the most reliable striker so far, having scored six goals in 12 games across all competitions, but just two in Premier League games.

As highlighted by Transfermarket there are three Italian strikers more prolific than the ex-Sassuolo star outside Serie A, but just one plays in one Europe’s top five leagues.

Vincenzo Grifo, not a centre forward, has scored three Bundesliga goals with Freiburg FC, Fabio Borini has managed five with Fatih Karagümrük in Turkey, while the most prolific Italian striker abroad is Andrea Compagno who has netted nine goals with Steaua București in the Romanian league.

The 26-year-old is a product of Catania academy and joined Steaua in a €1.5m deal from Craiova last summer.

  1. No need to look too far from home, 2 of what I think should be the front 3 play in Italy. Chiesa, Scamacca & Raspadori long term front 3.

  2. Let’s not.

A 26 year old scoring goals in the Romanian League is not going to be the answer to the problem. Keep working with Scamacca, Raspadori and Gnonto, or in case of a crisis, even Immobile himself.
