New Atalanta signings Marco Brescianini and Mateo Retegui were the best Italian players in Serie A Matchday 1: find out the best-performing Azzurri in the opening round.
Brescianini and Retegui scored two goals apiece in Atalanta’s 4-0 win over Lecce on Monday, sending La Dea to the top of the Serie A table with the best goal difference.
They were also the Italian players with the highest average match rating from sports papers (7.5/10 each).
The best full-backs were Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso, Atalanta’s Matteo Ruggeri and Torino’s Raoul Bellanova, who had an average rating of 7 out of 10.
Cambiaso scored once in Juventus’ 3-0 win over Como, while Ruggeri provided an assist in Atalanta’s away game at Lecce. The best wingers were Riccardo Orsolini (Bologna) and Mattia Zaccagni (Lazio), scorers of one goal each.
The highest-rated centre-back was Alessandro Vogliacco, scorer of his first Serie A goal in Genoa’s draw against Inter at Marassi.
Five other centre-backs averaged a 6.5/10 rating: Federico Gatti (Juventus), Nicolò Casale (Lazio), Armando Izzo, Giacomo Magnani and Diego Coppola of Hellas Verona.
None stood out among the goalkeepers but five received the same ratings, 6.5: Pietro Terracciano (Fiorentina), Pierluigi Gollini (Genoa), Ivan Provedel (Lazio), Semuel Pizzignacco (Monza) and Lorenzo Montipò (Verona).

At the minimum, people will start reading and talking about the italian youth (not only) players. This is a good start and who knows, maybe in 5 years they’ll be giving out sort of an award, you never know.
