Fiorentina confirmed Italy Under-21 international Federico Bernardeschi will be out for five months after ankle surgery.
The forward sustained a compound fracture of the external malleolus bone during a training ground collision.
Today the 20-year-old went under the knife in Florence, also suturing the deltoid ligament in the ankle.
Bernardeschi will be kept off his feet for six weeks and is not expected to be back in action before five months.
There is a real race against time for him to be fit enough to take part in the European Under-21 Championships in June 2015.
It is another bitter blow for the club, who already saw Giuseppe Rossi ruled out for five months.
