Silvio Berlusconi has branded plans for a new San Siro ‘absurd’ and expressed his belief that Suso would be ‘extraordinary’ as Milan’s No 10.
Milan and Inter have submitted joint-plans for a new, 60,000-seated stadium to replace San Siro, but Berlusconi is appalled at the idea.
“I’m absolutely against it, it’s nonsense,” the former Rossoneri owner told reporters in Lugano.
“San Siro can be used for other events, it’s in the hearts of all the Milanese people, milanisti and interisti, who care about football.
“The mere thought of it is absurd. They’ll be building another, while leaving San Siro to serve other functions.
“There have been games where there were requests for 100,000 tickets. Sixty-thousand seats won’t be enough.
“How do you demolish a place that made the hearts of Inter and Milan fans vibrate for decades and where we achieved so many victories? The heart wants its share.
“I have no power to oppose the plans and I haven’t yet heard from Beppe Sala, but I hope some reasoning and a bit of romance will lead them away from this decision.”
The 82-year-old was then asked about the Diavolo’s future under Elliott Management and whether Suso had what it took to be the ‘one’ in Marco Giampaolo’s 4-3-1-2.
“It’s disappointing. We once had 300m fans around the world and were considered by UEFA as the best team to ever exist.
“We need to return to those levels, and the new directors are working towards them. I send them my best wishes. I hope they do better than the previous ones.
“I haven’t talked to Giampaolo yet. I hope to meet him for breakfast or dinner. I’ve talked to President Scaroni and we’ll organise it as soon as possible.
“Suso has everything to be an extraordinary No 10. No-one from Milan is as good as him at taking on his man, but he can’t exploit his good shooting from the right.
“As for the transfer market, they’ve made me suffer for a while. I don’t want to talk about it.”
