Silvio Berlusconi says Monza are aiming for Serie A following their promotion to Serie B but that they ‘aren’t Milan’s third team. We have our own identity’.

Monza’s ascent to the second tier was confirmed earlier today, Berlusconi’s side having been top of their Serie C group – 16 points clear of second-placed Carrarese – before the coronavirus lockdown.

“I never had any doubts about it,” he told Il Cittadino.

“We started top we stayed there until the postponement. Now we’ll set up a top team to play in [Serie B].

“Promotion to Serie A depends on many factors, but we know some of them well and we’ll do everything to exploit them.”

The Biancorossi are located in Brianza, just a stone’s throw away from the city of Milan, so will the 83-year-old’s former club and Inter have a new sibling if they are promoted again?

“It can be considered a compliment, but Monza aren’t Milan’s third team. Monza belong to the city of Monza, Brianza and its 900,000 inhabitants.

“The city has its own identity, which is different to Milan. You can only be totally in love with a team that you feel.

“With the players and coach, I’m doing what I always did at Milan: I’m always in touch with them, I give them advice, I stimulate them, I congratulate them for their performances on the pitch and, where needed, I’ll make some observations.

“I haven’t lost the good habits I’ve always had.”
