Following the death of patron Silvio Berlusconi, it is reported his family want to sell Serie A club Monza, while CEO Adriano Galliani will ‘do anything I am asked to do in any sector.’

Berlusconi died last week at the age of 86 and his funeral was held at the Duomo Cathedral in Milan.

He always had a passion for football, purchasing Milan in 1986 on the verge of bankruptcy and taking them to win the Scudetto, Champions League and Intercontinental Cup.

After the sale to Yonghong Li in 2018, Berlusconi bought Monza in Serie C and shepherded them to their first ever Serie A campaign, which finished comfortably mid-table.

However, the Corriere della Sera newspaper reports that Berlusconi’s family discussed their inheritance and want to leave the world of football behind them, which means putting Monza up for sale.

Instead, Silvio’s faithful right-hand man Galliani – who worked both at Milan and now Monza – would be urged to stand as a candidate for Berlusconi’s Forza Italia political party, filling the Senate seat that was held by his friend and mentor.

“For the love I have for Silvio Berlusconi, I will do anything I am asked to do in any sector,” replied Galliani.

“At the moment, nobody has talked to me about standing as a political candidate in Monza, nor about the future of the Monza football club.”

The Corriere della Sera claims Monza had initially only been seeking new investors, but following Berlusconi’s death, the situation changed to wanting a complete takeover.
